Child Neurology Residency Selection Criteria

Selection of UMMC pediatric neurology residents is based upon academic records, recommendation letters and interviews without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, marital or veteran status, age or disability.

All residents/fellows at UMMC must obtain a Mississippi medical license. One requirement of the licensure board is that applicants must have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 (or COMLEX equivalents for DO applicants) before a restricted temporary license will be issued and must have passed USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 (or COMLEX equivalents) to be eligible for a permanent license. Graduates of foreign medical schools must pass USMLE Steps 1 and 2 to be eligible for a Limited Institutional License.

An applicant without United States citizenship must have a J-1 visa or a permanent resident card in order to be employed as a resident/fellow at UMMC.

Graduates of foreign medical schools must have an ECFMG certificate. All parts of it must be current when the applicant begins the residency program.

In an effort to conform to the nature of the selection and matching process relative to placement in our residency programs, UMMC will require each resident to submit to a drug screen immediately upon arrival on campus or during the initial orientation program. Trainees will be fingerprinted and background investigations will be conducted to include previous employment, licensing, certifications, and criminal, along with credit and personal references.

All residency and fellowship programs accept applications through ERAS, unless otherwise specified, and many participate in the NRMP placement program (or other matching systems). Interested individuals may contact the director of the program in which they are interested for specific application information.

The pediatric neurology resident program is a multidisciplinary residency at UMMC. The program includes rotations in 12 months of adult neurology and adult electives, 24 months of child neurology, which includes electives in neurosurgery, psychiatry, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, behavioral development, Genetics, neuroimaging, immunology, molecular biology, neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neuropathology, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and epidemiology and statistics.

Our director and team have created a resident program that will offer strong clinical and didactic educational experiences in all facets of pediatric neurology. We offer experiences in all subspecialties of pediatric neurology. Many opportunities for research are offered, including multiple scholarly activities with both retrospective and prospective research.
